Wristwatches were first initially introduced as campaign watches for British officers during the 1898 Sudan Campaign and the Boer War; but it was the First World War that saw wristwatches really produced on a mass scale as a practical alternative to the pocket watch. With the invention of the creeping bombardment it was more important than ever for all officers to have synchronized watches and in 1917 the War Office began issuing them directly to officers themselves. Due to the rigours of trench-warfare a variety of innovations were made that included luminous dials and these shrapnel guards to prevent the glass getting smashed during the day-to-day wear and tear of trench life. This is a nice surviving example of these iconic Officers' Great War artefacts.
