WW2 plastic economy issue badges were made during the 2nd world war as a cheap way of saving metal that could be better employed making munitions and weapons. These badges are often known as Bakelite but they were made from a thermoplastic called cellulose acetate and the term Bakerlite is incorrect. Some of them are very common and at the time they were not popular so were often discarded which has meant that some of them are now very rare and they have become very collectable. Around 130 different badges were made with some being made in the 100's of thousands, whilst others were produced in much smaller numbers. This material was also used for rank stars and crowns and there were a number of makers, with Stanley being the most common. Most are maker marked and often have mould numbers, though some were not marked in any way. Most have brass blades for attachment, though some have plastic lugs, most commonly seen on the rank insignia.
